چکیده

This paper is about the distinction between arguments and conditionals, corresponding premises antecedents. I will also propose a further two different kinds of argument, and, correspondingly, premise that call "assumption" "hypothesis." The assumptions, hypotheses, antecedents easily made in artificial languages, we are already familiar with it from our first logic courses (although not necessarily under those names, since there no standard terminology for distinction). After explaining their differences argue ordinary-language counterparts these three notions, meaning some formal properties notions nicely capture features behavior contexts reasoning. My next crucial claim often get confused ordinary language, which leads to problems translation into symbols. suggest solution problem by pointing distinctive characteristics link them artificial-language counterparts. Next, this confusion behind well-known philosophical puzzles. apply distinctions order explain away famous paradoxes: direct argument (also known as or-to-if inference), fatalism, McGee's counterexample modus ponens. As Stalnaker solved paradoxes using his theory reasonable inference, elucidate similarities solutions, why my more broadly, cases involving indicative counterfactuals where inference does apply.

The aim of this communication is to present new focuses for research in the field of Environment and Information Communication Technology. In the first part, we will present, through a review of the literature, the rather negative role played by ICT on the environment: paper, transportation, consumption, waste... The aim of the second part is to discuss the rather positive role played by ICT wi...

The wings before the bird: an evaluation of flapping-based locomotory hypotheses in bird antecedents

BACKGROUND Powered flight is implicated as a major driver for the success of birds. Here we examine the effectiveness of three hypothesized pathways for the evolution of the flight stroke, the forelimb motion that powers aerial locomotion, in a terrestrial setting across a range of stem and basal avians: flap running, Wing Assisted Incline Running (WAIR), and wing-assisted leaping. METHODS Us...

Tests of some hypotheses on characteristic roots of covariance matrices not requiring normality assumptions

Test statistics for testing some hypotheses on characteristic roots of covariance matrices are presented, their asymptotic distribution is derived and a confidence interval for the proportional sum of the characteristic roots is constructed. The resulting procedures are robust against violation of the normality assumptions in the sense that they asymptotically possess chosen significance level ...

Sensitivity analysis: distributional assumptions and confounding assumptions.

In a presentation of various methods for assessing the sensitivity of regression results to unmeasured confounding, Lin, Psaty, and Kronmal (1998, Biometrics54, 948-963) use a conditional independence assumption to derive algebraic relationships between the true exposure effect and the apparent exposure effect in a reduced model that does not control for the unmeasured confounding variable. How...
